Iraq Inma Project
August 2012

Agland farm managers have provided experienced long-term consultants to develop sustainable annual and perennial horticultural crops such as strawberries, tomatoes, forage crops, dates, tree fruit and other specialty crops. Agland recently worked to improve strawberry production and trained a group of Iraqi farmers to grow and market strawberries, using strawberry varieties imported from Turkey.

Strawberry production is an excellent development tool for several reasons. First, it is a high value crop, yielding nearly unmatched gross revenues on a per hectare basis. Thus, farmers with very small land holdings can earn an impressive income on a modestly sized parcel. Second, the turnaround on investment is very short. An Iraqi farmer can plant in October and complete their season by May or June, effectively earning a return on investment in less than a year.
